How to Advocate with Heather Hansen

Oct 26, 2020

Do you get caught up in what is going on in other people’s lives? I know I do, and it rarely results in anything good. I want to talk to you today about O.P.B. — other people’s business. Too often we allow other people’s business to distract us from what matters most in our own lives. We waste time focusing on what someone else is wearing, doing, earning, or experiencing when we could be spending that same time shaping and benefitting our own lives. I want you to understand the dangers of focusing on O.P.B., why you need to overcome it, and what you stand to gain if you can take that same energy and put it into improving your own life.

Today we discuss —

The danger of focusing on other people’s business

  • O.P.B. can be one of the greatest distractions and addictions in our lives.
  • Every time you visit social media websites, you are getting into O.P.B.
  • O.P.B. can become an addiction if left unchecked.
  • Spending time on social media and in O.P.B. takes you away from your own life, dreams, plans, and goals.
  • Comparing yourself to your competitors can distract you from focusing on your work.

How to overcome your obsession with O.P.B.

  • Check yourself and make sure that you are staying in your “own lane.”
  • Focus on earning your own wins, whether they be at work, or in your personal life.
  • Worry less about what other people think of and say about you.
  • Ask yourself Byron Katie’s four questions to define what you should be focusing on.
  • If you are spending your time in someone else’s business, and they are spending time in their business, who is spending time in your business?

Tips for staying focused on YOUR business

  • Call it what it is — if you are going on Facebook say, “I am spending an hour of my time in someone else’s business.”
  • Spend so much time in your own business that you have no time for O.P.B.
  • Focus on fostering your real-life relationships rather than virtual ones.
  • Consider what you stand to gain by putting your time into your business.
